Tulip, 2005 Floriade, Canberra; by John O’NeillIf I hadn’t opened an e-mail this morning announcing the first day of spring, I would have missed it. This is definitely a day of celebration. What a great day!
There’s so much that comes to mind when I think of spring: Newness. Freshness. Life. Activity.
What do you think of?
In my neck of the woods here in the Pacific Northwest, I have to say I am amazed at the tenacity of nature. The weather hasn’t altogether been very conducive to springlike growth. For example, at the beginning of the month, it snowed! We’ve also had heavy rains and windstorms.
Yet, the daffodils, the tulips, and the irises are are not deterred! I’m reminded of Anais Nin’s great quote:
"And the day came when the risk it took to remain tight inside the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."
Even the amaryllis I have in my home (of which I had my doubts as to whether it was coming back) is now happily emerging from its nutrient soil!
How about you? Are you likewise reaching for the light even in times of stress or challenge, spreading your petals wide
Nina Simone – "Forever Young, Gifted & Black"open toward the sun?
What one small thing can you do to make this day — today and every day — a new day?
When I received that Happy Spring email this morning, I thought of Nina Simone’s soulful "Feeling Good." So I opened my
iTunes on my computer and listened.
I wish I could play it for you here, but copyright laws do not permit that. But, I can share with you the lyrics!
Can you hear her emotion? Can you feel her energy? Are you feeeeeelin’ good?
Feeling Good
Birds flying high you know how I feel
Sun in the sky you know how I feel
Reeds driftin on by you know how I feel
Its a new dawn
Its a new day
Its a new life
For me, yeah
Its a new dawn
Its a new day
Its a new life
For me
Oooo
And Im feeling good
Fish in the sea you know how I feel
River running free you know how I feel
Blossom in the tree you know how I feel
(refrain:)
Its a new dawn
Its a new day
Its a new life
For me
And Im feeling good
Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, dont you know
Butterflies all havin fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
Thats what I mean
And this old world is a new world
And a bold world
For me
Stars when you shine you know how I feel
Scent of the pine you know how I feel
Oh freedom is mine
And I know how I feel
Its a new dawn
Its a new day
Its a new life
For me
Im feeling good
How you feelin’? Good, I hope!
Happy first day of Spring!
